There are some costs that you simply can’t avoid when planning for prom. You need a ticket for the event and something to wear, after all.
Prom Tickets
The cost of prom tickets can vary wildly depending on the way your school holds the dance. Some schools keep costs low by holding it in a space like the gymnasium and having volunteers make decorations on a budget and parents help with the catering. Other schools lean into the formal nature and may rent a local ballroom or event space and even hire out the catering.
Tickets typically start around $50, but can go up to $200 with some schools charging a higher price for guest tickets if your date does not attend your school. Check and see how much your school charged for tickets last year to get a more accurate estimate of what this year’s cost will be if they haven’t announced this year’s price yet.
Prom Dress or Tux
Prom is one of the few formal events you get to attend in high school so you should dress accordingly. Many schools will even have dress codes that don’t allow casual clothing at prom. Part of the fun is dressing up, so you don’t want to miss out.
Most students will either buy a dress or rent a tuxedo. Tuxedos or suits can cost anywhere from $100 to $300 for the night, depending on the accessories you choose, but some rental shops will have special package deals for prom. If you have a nice suit from a wedding or other event you could save money by opting to wear that.

Limo
Some people like to rent a limo for prom to show up in style. While you’ll definitely make a splash with your arrival, limo rentals are typically $100 per hour or more. So if you have your heart set on one, try to coordinate with several friends so you can split the cost.
Salon
Many people will go to the salon before prom to get their hair, make-up, and nails done for the dance. This can easily cost several hundred dollars depending on the services you choose.
You and your friends could, instead, make a day of it by meeting at someone’s house and getting ready together, helping each other with hair and makeup. You’ll make more memories and save some money.
Flowers
Dates also often exchange corsages and boutonnieres at prom in matching colors. You and your date could opt out of this, but the cost is typically around $15 to $30 depending on the flowers and design you choose.

Prom is special, but it’s still only one night. Most attendees can expect to pay several hundred dollars in total, but you can easily go over the top and spend over a thousand dollars.
